The study design that provides the most compelling evidence of a causal relationship between the treatment and the effect, is the randomized controlled trial. Observational studies in epidemiology such as the cohort study and the case-control study are clinical studies in that they involve human participants, but provide less compelling evidence than the randomized controlled trial. The major difference between clinical trials and observational studies is that, in clinical trials, the investigators manipulate the administration of a new intervention and measure the effect of that manipulation, whereas observational studies only observe associations (correlations) between the treatments experienced by participants and their health status or diseases. These are fundamental distinctions in Evidence Based Medicine. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clinical_trial.... one tool in Evidence Based Medicine... type of Experiment (more)
Thinking, Fast and Slow is a 2011 popular science book by the Israeli-American psychologist Daniel Kahneman. Its main thesis is a differentiation between two modes of thought: "System 1" is fast, instinctive and emotional; "System 2" is slower, more deliberative, and more logical. The book delineates rational and non-rational motivations or triggers associated with each type of thinking process, and how they complement each other, starting with Kahneman's own research on loss aversion. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thinking,_Fast_and_Slow (more)
Daniel Kahneman (/ˈkɑːnəmən/; Hebrew: דניאל כהנמן; March 5, 1934 – March 27, 2024) was an Israeli-American psychologist best known for his work on the psychology of judgment and decision-making as well as behavioral economics, for which he was awarded the 2002 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences together with Vernon L. Smith. Kahneman's published empirical findings challenge the assumption of human rationality prevailing in modern economic theory. Kahneman became known as the "grandfather of behavioral economics."[1][2][3] With Amos Tversky and others, Kahneman established a cognitive basis for common human errors that arise from heuristics and biases, and developed prospect theory. In 2011, Kahneman was named by Foreign Policy magazine in its list of top global thinkers.[4] In the same year, his book Thinking, Fast and Slow, which summarizes much of his research, was published and became a best seller.[5] In 2015, The Economist listed him as the seventh most influential economist in the world. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Kahneman
In psychology, grit is a positive, non-cognitive trait based on a person's perseverance of effort combined with their passion for a particular long-term goal or end state (a powerful motivation to achieve an objective). This perseverance of effort helps people overcome obstacles or challenges to accomplishment and drives people to achieve. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grit_(personality_trait) (more)
Angela Lee Duckworth (born 1970) is an American academic, psychologist, and popular science author. She is the Rosa Lee and Egbert Chang Professor of Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, where she studies grit and self-control. She is the founder and former CEO of Character Lab, a not-for-profit whose mission is to advance the science and practice of character development. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angela_Duckworth
Jonathan Martin looks at research on Self Control/grit as a crucial trait for kids' success in life (Educating Kids). Having just finished Paul Tough’s new book, How Children Succeed, I believe Angela Duckworth stands out significantly in that book (she’s the star); she offers a series of perceptive insights and the research evidence which underpin the book, as captured in its subtitle, Grit, Curiosity and the Hidden Power of Character... We should be equally worried, about learning that is too easy for our students, learning that is about listening to the lecture, reading the book, and “cranking out” the paper, year after year (NPC), for at least 8 of them, and then coming out of college and realizing how much more is required of success... From her collaboration with the legendary positive psychology guru Martin Seligman, whose work has long been highly important to me, Duckworth, as Tough explains, has derived a list of 7 key traits of character in this context, and note the way this is understood as performance character, not Moral character: Grit, Self Control, zest, Social Intelligence, gratitude, Optimism, and curiosity. Dorian Taylor: Spreadsheet Rantifesto. Alan Kay famously said to choose the right data structure before you start tinkering around with the algorithm…you will have most of the result computed almost automatically as part of its inherent structure. Which is why the spreadsheet as the go-to data structure is so lamentable. In general, I never want data as it comes in a spreadsheet. I almost always want it as a graph, or at least a tree. Graphs and trees—at least ordered trees like XML or JSON—can embed tabular data, such as that found in a spreadsheet, but the same cannot be said for the other way around. (more)
Joseph Carl Robnett Licklider (March 11, 1915 – June 26, 1990), known simply as J.C.R. or "Lick" was an American psychologist [1] and computer scientist considered one of the most important figures in computer science and general computing history. He is particularly remembered for being one of the first to foresee modern-style Interactive computing, and its application to all manner of activities; and also as an Internet pioneer, with an early vision of a worldwide computer network long before it was built. He did much to actually initiate all that through his funding of research which led to a great deal of it, including today's canonical graphical user interface, and the ARPANET, the direct predecessor to the Internet... In 1960 his seminal paper on ManComputerSymbiosis foreshadowed interactive computing, and he went on to fund early efforts in time-sharing and application development, most notably the work of Douglas Engelbart, who founded the Augmentation Research Center at Stanford Research Institute (SRI) and created the famous On-Line System (NLS) where the computer mouse was invented. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._C._R._Licklider (more)
